This is an exciting year for basketball fans, with Sydney hosting the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

The Women's Basketball World Cup has been held since 1953 with the first tournament hosted in Chile. Australia previously hosted the event in 1994, with games played in venues all across the country.

This year the tournament takes place solely in Sydney from 22nd September through to 1st October. All matches are to be played at Sydney Olympic Park shared between the Sports Centre and the Superdome. With 12 national teams playing 38 games over 10 days, we're in for some real excitement.

The Basketball Teams

This year, the USA team are the definite favourites to watch out for. As winners of the women's basketball gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, they earned prime position in the tournament.

Australia, as the host country, gains automatic entry into the tournament. As the only country not needing to officially qualify, the Australian Opals will definitely have something to prove.

The remaining 10 team earned entry into the Women's Basketball World Cup through the Qualifying Tournaments held in February 2022.

The 12 team are split into two groups of six, with each team in a group playing each other once. The top two teams from each group then advance to the finals rounds.

The national teams with a position in the 2022 Women's World Cup tournament are;

Group A

  • Belgium
  • China
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Puerto Rico
  • Korea
  • USA

Group B

  • Australia - the Opals!
  • France
  • Serbia
  • Japan
  • Mali
  • Canada

The Group phase games end on Tuesday 27th September with the 28th September being held as rest day before finals. Quarter-finals begin on 29th September, Semi-finals on the 30th, and the Grand Final and Runner-up games on Saturday 1st October.

Where to watch the 2022 Women's World Cup Basketball

Of course, if you feel like catching the action live at the venue, you can purchase tickets to individual games. Tickets are available through the Womens' Basketball World Cup 2022 website. Get in now before you miss out.

Many of us, however, are happy to watch the games from the comfort of our own home. If this sounds like the best option to you, you'll need to sign up to the Kayo sports streaming app on your TCL smart TV.

Subscriptions to Kayo range from $25 - $35 per month depending upon the number of screens you'll be watching on. Just make sure you download the app and sign up in advance so you don't miss any of the action. All games are covered, and you should be able to get replays if you can't watch live.
