Installation of an AC is a critical job. That's why it's best done by professionals who are trained to do it. A good installation is not only important for the longevity of your air conditioner but also for it to do its job well. An air conditioner installed correctly will provide the right amount of cooling and increases the durability too. It also helps to get service and maintenance done under the warranty.
While a professional installs an air conditioner, it is important for you, as a consumer, to also know some key aspects of installing a split air conditioner.
1. Place of installation
Do determine the exact location of the indoor and outdoor unit. You don’t want to install the air conditioner in a place where the cooling will be ineffective or it will cool so much that you feel like you are in the Arctic Region.
2. Wall Strength
Make sure that the wall that will hold the air conditioner’s indoor unit is strong enough. It should be able to endure the vibration of the unit.
3. Spacing
It is recommended that the indoor unit of the split AC has at least 10 - 15 cm of open space around its top and sides. This is needed for proper air flow. Inhibiting air flow could make it harder to expel heat. This will drive your air conditioners operating costs up. It has the potential to damage the compressor as well.
4. Height of indoor unit
In a 10 ft high room, for optimum cooling, a height of 7-8 ft above the ground is recommended. This will ensure that the cool air spreads well around the room. It also ensures that the air conditioner is not too busy cooling the hot roof which only means higher electricity bill for you.
5. Location of outdoor unit
Open space is ideal for the outdoor unit of a split air conditioner, perhaps a terrace,in the balcanies, back of side wall and also on Pari Pari slabs also in such a way that it is safe and secure to access both for installation and servicing. Open space means that there is nothing to block the flow or air. This will ensure a lot of freedom for your compressor and condenser to perform well. Do make sure that the outdoor unit is not directly under sunlight.
If a terrace is not available, an external space with a strong wall that can hold the weight of the outdoor unit without restricting air flow, is also good.
It is also important to ensure that the outdoor unit is on a flat surface. Outdoor unit houses all the crucial parts of your air conditioner including the compressor and condenser. Outdoor units vibrate. If the surface is not flat, continuous vibration, especially during summer months when the air conditioner is used almost non stop, could lead to damage of compressor and condenser. A damaged compressor and condenser is no good. This will increase your service costs and in worst cases, may need the unit itself to be replaced.
6. Distance between indoor and outdoor units
Distance between both the units is important to ensure optimum and efficient performance of your air conditioner. The closer the distance, the more effective the performance. TCL experts recommend that the unit should not be separated by more than 15 metres.
WHY IS CORRECT INSTALLATION IMPORTANT?
1. Ensures proper cooling
