Introduction

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is the next level of picture quality, bringing a whole new level of detail to your television. HDR technology allows for deeper colors, brighter whites, and more vivid contrast on your screen. TCL's HDR-compatible televisions deliver these features in television that don't compromise on size or price.

Welcome to the world of HDR TV

The world of high dynamic range (HDR) TVs is a vast one, and it can be overwhelming for anyone just starting out. There are several different formats for HDR content and TVs, and each has its own benefits. So what exactly is HDR? How does it work? What can you do with it? Let's start at the beginning:

The Basics of High Dynamic Range (HDR) Technology

What is High Dynamic Range?

HDR is a technology in which an image is displayed on a screen, with the number of colors and brightness levels greater than that of standard-definition television. A high dynamic range image allows you to see more detail in both highlights and shadows, as well as clearer, more natural color transitions.  There are three main HDR formats: HDR10 and HDR10+. HDR10 is the open standard for HDR. HDR10+ is the royalty-free standard for HDR. HDR10+ closely matches Dolby Vision's capabilities but lacks content, and not as many TVs support HDR10+ as HDR10. HDR10 offers the distinct advantage of supporting more content and being supported by all 4k TVs.

A whole new level of detail

As the name implies, HDR provides a more realistic picture than SDR(Standard Dynamic Range) by allowing for a wider range of luminance levels. Let's break down what this means:

First, it’s important to know that HDR content is encoded in what's called Rec. 2020 color space—the same as Ultra HD Blu-ray and UHD TV broadcasts (4K). It's not just about higher resolution; the colors are also more accurate. With HDR10 or Dolby Vision mastering, you'll get richer colors that are closer to true-to-life than ever before.

HDR brings out details in the shadows and highlights of a scene with greater intensity than SDR can do on standard dynamic range screens. It has been around for a few years and is becoming more common in TVs as well as movie theaters. It's easy to see why it's considered the "future of TV." Viewers can now enjoy theater-like quality at home on TCL HDR-featured TVs.

It’s already here

HDR content has been available for some time with streaming services and now TCL is proud to be one of the first manufacturers with an HDR-compatible television line featuring Dolby Vision™ technology that delivers even greater picture quality than ever before!

TCL HDR TVs also support a wider color gamut so you get even more vivid colors displayed on your TV than ever before! There are three widely used types of HDR TV formats: HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, which you’ll learn more about later in this article.

HDR vs. 4K UHD, Which TCL 4K UHD TVs are compatible with HDR?

4K UHD is a resolution standard for ultra-high-definition television, introduced in 2012. It has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels (8 million pixels), which is four times greater than HDTV (1920 x 1080 pixels) and 16 times greater than SDTV (720 x 480).

As you can see now, HDR and UHD are two different ways of measuring display quality. HDR describes how a display's pixels are optimized for color, brightness, and contrast, while 4K UHD describes the display's total amount of pixels.

A 4K UHD TV may support HDR or not at all depending on the type of display. Most 4K UHD TVs now come with HDR support. A TV with both features can provide a better viewing experience than one without for sure. TCL is a global, innovative, and professional manufacturer of televisions that provide a wide option of TVs featuring both HDR and 4K UHD for home, office, commercial and industrial use. For instance, Mini LED TV C835, Colorful QLED TV C635.

Popular streaming services that offer HDR content

With the likes of Prime Video, Netflix, Rakuten TV, Apple TV Plus, and Disney Plus, the number of video streaming services that support HDR has increased, and HDR material is frequently added to each service.

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are two of the most popular streaming services, with Netflix having over 140 million paid subscribers worldwide, and Amazon Prime Video is free for those who subscribe to an annual Prime membership. Both services offer high-quality HDR content that can be streamed using TCL's 4K Roku TV platform, which includes access to thousands of apps and games. Vudu is a third-party streaming service available on TCL TVs that also offers a wide selection of films in HDR, including many first-run releases. Hulu recently began offering some content in Dolby Vision as well; however, Hulu does not currently support Dolby Vision natively on its own devices or through AppleTV yet (but it does support some other brands' TVs). YouTube also supports HDR video playback on TCL TVs.

HDR titles can be found in Dolby Vision HDR, HDR10+, or the industry-standard HDR10. The current mastering range for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content is 1,000 to 4,000 cd/m². Depending on the content, HDR10 can be mastered anywhere up to 4,000 cd/m², although it has no minimum brightness requirement. All three specifications are compatible with images up to 10,000 cd/m².

TCL TV is a good choice if you want your television to have HDR capabilities

If you are looking for a new TV, TCL is a good choice. The company has built up an impressive portfolio of high-quality, affordable televisions over the years—and its latest models feature some of the best HDR that we've seen yet.

Conclusion

High Dynamic Range: a way of delivering TV content with more colors, deeper blacks, and a wider range of contrast than what we’re used to. The TCL HDR TV is a great way to experience the excitement of High Dynamic Range.
